Well, we've got a 706 gas, and a 686 diesel (656, 666, 686 are all the same tractor, aside from a few different engines), so I'll try to help. The 706 and 656 have the same gas engine, (late 706's have a C-291 instead of the C-263, but it's just the same engine with a bigger bore) so there is no reliability difference there, and they start very nicely in cold weather. The real difference between the 706 and 656 is the TA/trans/brakes/hydraulics/rear end. The 706 is built much heavier, you get power brakes, hydraulic TA, more hydraulic power, more gear speeds, 540/1000 RPM PTO. I really woudn't say that one tractor is more reliable than the other, but they are both very exellent tractors, and you really can't go wrong by buying the tractor that you feel fits your needs/price range best.
