I have to agree with you Larry, these tractors are all good tractors. Just pick the right one for the job. For example the 656 being a lighter chassis is by far the best tractor on items like mower conditioners or balers. They all have more than enough hp for those jobs. The 656 is lighter thus more agile. It will also be more fuel efficient on those lighter jobs. I know it is the same engine as the 706, but the pump is set different and 540 rpm take off on 706 is at 2300 engine rpm, on the 656 it is at 1800 engine rpm. The key to efficiency on diesel engines is keep the rpm down. Most of them develop their maximum torque at 1500 rpm or less. Just yesterday two of us were running dump trucks both IH DT466. He never passed me all day, we both hauled same number of loads. Engines are governed 2700 rpm. I drive rarely exceeding 2000 rpm, he on other hand has pedal on floor all the time. At the end of the day we fueled up. My truck took 150litres he was over 200litres. He can't understand how I do that, I haven't bothered to tell him either. He likes the roar of that diesel on the mat. The 706 would have been a far better and far more efficient tractor had IH used the same engine as 806 and given it standard pto 540 rpm at 1800 and tuned it to suit. Just one of the many stupid mistakes at IH.

We traveled for six and a half hours to our destination - a little country town with a population of no more then one hundred and fifty people (57 of them being children under the age of thirteen). We arrived hoping to meet up with a man we knew had over one
