The development of the Farmall was an eveloution, begining in the early 1920s, and until 1939 they were a very crude but necessary device in that evolution. From 1939 onward it was improvment of basic models into the 60s. Take the A for example, as SA, 100, 130 then 140 was in there until 1979. Same can be said for the M as SM, SMTA, 400, 450, 560, 656, 666 and 686 ending again in 1979. 656 is my favourite, it is nothing more than an M with an excellent draft controlled 3 point hitch, a good comfortable operators platform, live pto, TA, and a smooth 6 cylinder engine. 56 series was the best Farmall had to offer. 56 series was very efficient tractor and that was lost on later models.
