The early diesel engines are equipped with a carb and a distributor ignition system. When the engine is in starting mode, decompression valves in the head open, to lower compression, the distributor is engaged, the carb's throttle opens, and the engine starts on gas. After the engine has warmed up, the lever is placed in run mode, disengaging the dist. and carb, closing the decompression valves, and engaging the injector pump.
