Find an old ignition testor that has an electronic tach built into it. (I have an old dwell & tach unit from the 70's) Hook it up to the coil and compare the tach readings to your mechanical tach. It will tell you if your mechanical tach is working correctly.

Check out e-bay for a cheap one. Here is one that comes with a timing light from Sears..
