Just get a MD, 450d... Start on gas in any weather, no problems. I bought a mag block heater for $20 recently. I use it for pre-heating veggy oil in my fuel filter. Once the engine is warm, its not necessary though. If you run straight veggy oil, it needs to be rather warm so it doesnt clog the filters and injectors up. My diesel escort has troubles in the winters, I think some of the glow plugs are screwed up though. I also have a 6.2 turbo diesel in my suburban, which starts fine regardless of temp. Heating the engine oil might not be the best way to get it to start. Perhaps heating the diesel at the filter is the way to go. From what I understand, the reason you dont get a good start is that the diesel is getting too thick at those cold temps. I guess I will try the heater on my escort this year and see if it solves the problem. -Greg

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
