Al: I used a lot of duals over the years on 1066, 656 and 560. I never used any weights liquid or solid on those tractors. I found they would pull just as much tillage tools dualed as single with weight. Soil compaction costs more money every year than we realize. First year I had 1066 I pulled 24 foot cultivator also a 20 foot disc with 20" plates with single wheels and liquid weight. Planting corn or drilling grain with 656, I could feel every wheel track 1066 left especially when crossed tracks diagonally. In early stages of crop devlopment you could see those tracks reflected in crop. The 1066 also destroyed its first tires that first year. Had bulges on tires so bad you couldn't use high gear on hard road. I bought a set of axle duals and 4 new tires and the liquid weight didn't go back. Within a year I had duals for 560 and 656, again all weights were removed. From that time on duals were never off 1066 and 560. I did drop them from 656 for mower conditioner, corn planter, spraying, etc. Tires will last a lot longer. Second set of tires on 1066 went 9 years and 9,000 hours.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
