Does it have a distributor drive live hydralic pump? If so, the seals could be out of it and your hydralic oil is going into the crankcase.

Could be a coolant leak into the oil, caused by a bad headgasket or cracked block or head. Is the radiator low?

Also, could be that your carburetor is set too rich and raw fuel is getting past the rings because it is flooding out. Could also be an ignition problem that the spark plugs are not always firing.

Does the engine run smoothly and without any smoke when it does run good?
