Jon, there are two bearings on that shaft. At the tranny end, it seats in the bearing retainer cage, which is secured with three bolts and shims underneath. The outer end has a bearing held on with an odd shaped ring. I'd make sure the shims on the inner end are very clean (it doesn' take much dirt to change that clearance), and that the outer bearing is driven all the way onto the shaft and fully seated in the final drive housing. Also check to make sure that the brake drum isn't restricting the length of the shaft as it goes back to the tranny. I found one of my drums doing that. It's an old machine that had some play to begin with, so you won't get rid of all of it, but if you've got your bearings seated right and the shims under the bearing cage and the brake drum right. That's about all you can do on the outside. If the play poses a problem when underway, there may be (I'm not sure, my books aren't here) some shimming you can do on the differential gears. Hope this helps
