Dave, I have two 1944 H's and I use the same weight motor oil in the oil bath as is in the crankcase. I could only imagine the engine sucking oil from the oil bath if it was totally overfilled other wise, I am sceptical that it could happen. I am interested in your comment about the tune up. If the carb is not set correctly or your engine valve timing is off you could get smoking and wettness on the plugs. I would suggest a compression test to answer your concerns. If you don't have a compression tester you can borrow or rent one and it doesn't take long to check. If your cylinders are all within 10 lbs of each other and they are between 90 and 120 your smoking is not likely related to ring, sleeve, piston but carb, timing etc. I have one H that is 85lbs across the board and it really doesn't smoke much once it is warmed up. If it has been idling and you open it up it gives oil smoke for a moment , then clears up. I suspect the "tune up" as you indicated. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
