Transmissions in those are quite expensive to rebuild, my dad's had his rebuilt twice, first time a gear chipped and and the chip went through the gears, cost $3500 to get it fixed, and the second time a nut came off a shaft and ran through all the gears and bearings, cost $5000 to get it fixed that time. I imagine the guy is trying to sell it for what he has invested in it.
