I rarely ever touch the top tap, unless I have reason to believe oil is above that level. I always check the lower one first and only add oil if it is below the lower one. I check oil when engine is cold and am very particular to make sure tractor was left in a level position the night before. If oil does get above the higher tap I will drain it off. I am very particular that oil must be between those two levels. Had the oil changed in my Buick, couple weeks back, new location. Next morning checked Buick, 1/2 inch over full. I went straight to service centre made him drain the excess. I was just as annoyed as if I had found Buick 1/2 inch below add. Very important you keep you oil between those to taps or in the case of a dipstick between add and full. That crankcase is engineered for that level. To much oil creates presure and presure pops seals.
