Jeff - The gage unit is a simple pressure gage with temperature instead of pressure markings. It's connected via the capillary lead to a bulb (the sensor) screwed into the water jacket in the head. The bulb is filled at the factory with a small quantity of a low boiling/low freezing point working fluid (a water/alcohol mix, or perhaps one of the freons - I'm not sure), and the system is then sealed. In operation, the gas pressure in the bulb is proportional to the temperature at the hottest spot in the system (the bulb). The pressure gage senses this pressure and thus provides an indication of the temperature of the coolant in the head. Unfortunately this type of gage cannot be repaired. Usually what happens is the working fluid slowly leaks out over time. When the fluid's all gone the gage simply quits. Unfortunately the only "repair" is to replace entire gage and bulb assembly with a new one.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
