Sounds like your alternator has failed (probably a shorted internal diode). Cheapest fix is to visit a boneyard and buy another one like it, or get a rebuilt one like it from Auto-Zone, NAPA, etc. Recommend you replace the regulator at the same time. Or you can swap in a Delco "single wire" alternator. But a single wire will cost you more than the above. And you may have to mess around changing the mounting bracket, drive belt, etc for it to fit. Finally keep in mind a single wire alternator must to be spun up to a higher RPM than a standard alternator before it'll begin to charge. Can be a problem on a slow-revving motor like the M - may cause you to have to find a smaller alternator drive pulley so the alternator will spin fast enough.
