The worm gear is pretty steep. Around $300 for a new one, I think. And if you replace that you'd probably replace the sector gear, too. You can replace everything else (bushings, thrust bearing, spacers, seals, etc.) for a lot less. And maybe make it enough better. On the other hand, the worm gear is far the least work to change. Some people have had an improvement by taking the sector gear off and turning it 180 degrees. Run on an unworn spot.
