Sounds like it could be dirt in the gas tank. I'm not sure of the history of your machine, but if you are like me and tinkering with an old tractor for the first time, that is where my problem was, same symptoms, try this:
Start it up, drive it til it dies, jump off and pull the line to the carb from the gas tank, if little or no gas is flowing you have a dirt clogging up. Do you have a sediment bowl?
