light switch replacement problem - the light will not turn off?

In trying to replace my light switches, I ran into a problem. When I replaced the switch, the light does not turn off. The light is controlled by this switch alone, but there is another switch which is tied off to this one to control a fan. The fan switch operates normally.
My problem started when the switch that I bought was not exactly like the one I was replacing, but I did not think it really mattered that much, much to my surprise. The original switch had not only posts with screws, but also had the ability to directly be inserted into connections in the switch. My replacement had only screw posts, so I assumed that I could just combine both red onto a sngle post and both black on the other post. This resulted in as I said, failure to be able to turn off the light. I then went a bought a switch like the one I was trying to replace and tried to recreate the wiring as before, but after trying several different combinations, I am still unable to get the light to turn off. The wires feeding the switch are as follows:
Two red wires and two black wires. One of the black wires was stripped and attached to one of the poles on the switch. This wire goes to the fan switch. I do not recall if the other black wire went into the connector or was under the connector. Both of the red wires went to the other pole, but I don't know which was in the slot or which was on the pole. I believe I have tried all the combinations, but still, the light will not shut off?
Can anyone shed any "further light" on this subject?
