There might be a cheaper way of doing what you want. I used an old homemade single-acting loader to move lots of dirt in my younger days. Remember you don't have a lot of power or weight so you have to think of taking small bites. First, is the bucket set up properly for digging? Is it relatively narrow? Is the front edge somewhat sharp? Is the bucket pointed a little downward when it contacts the ground? If the front of the bucket points kind of upward you're going to slide it along the ground instead of digging. Second, if all of the above is right but the ground is just too hard, you can use a plow like a ripper to break up the soil.
