My father has a '42 A with the exaust lift as well, where I have a '44 A with the hand lifts. He has been using his for over twenty years now in our 2 acre garden we have and it has worked well for us. Of course we don't use it as much as a full time farmer would. He cleans it up good about once a year in the fall before snow plowing season. Is it the manifold itself that is shot or the valve that goes on the manifold? You can get new and/or used manifolds for the A's, but much else than that is hard. We even have a hard time finding gaskets for the valves. They are good for the hobbyist and collectors as they aren't that common (even then). I am sure you will have good luck at getting them to work. This site is really good at helping people. Good Luck and keep us updated. Mike@NY
