I looked into oat hay this summer.The county soil and crop adviser suggested sowing 3 bushels of oats with 250 lbs of 16-16-16 fertilizer.He also suggested mixing some barley seed in.The barley doesn't look as good as straight oats but yeilds a higher tonnage according to him.I disced a 1 acre plot after the wheat straw had been baled.I mixed the fertilizer with the seed in a bulk spreader and harrowed it in after spreading.I should have used the disc to cover the seed.The day I planted I had too many things going on so when the mill was out of oats I just substituted straight barley.It was planted August 1 and looks really good now.I intend to cut it just before it heads for hay.
