Stan has given you a good discription of how hydraulic function happens. If all you wish to do with hydraulics is operate 3 point hitch you need nothing but plumbimg. 3 point hitches do not have double action hydraulic, weight of hitch and implement will take them down. What you discribed when you extended cylinder currently on tractor is normal for a single action cylinder. This cylinder I assume has one hose going to it. On ram end of cylinder there is a breather designed to allow air or liquid out of or indeed back in ram side of piston. The oil you are getting is oil that by-passed the piston at some time. You can rebuild the cylinder, however some oil is always going to get by piston. To elininate this problem with any cylinder, all you have to do is remove breather and run plumbing back to tractors resovoir. This will allow any oil that has by-passed the cylinder piston to return to resovoir and not be lost or create a mess.
