Mabey I can help with a few of those questions. I have a Farmall 240 Row-Crop, very, very similar to the Utility. When I first got it, it had a squealing noise whenever I tried to use the hydraulics. I rebuilt the Saftey/Regulator valve, which is usally located on the valve support under the gas tank, and my problems were solved. It sounds like yours is set up differently. Just look for a valve near lines coming from the pump and having no linkages going to it. This is an open-center system. As far as the water in the rear end, fill the rear end with diesel fuel, drive the tractor around for 5 minutes, drain, and refill with Hy-Tran. Rinse the hyd. resivor out with diesel fuel, too. Water could have entered while the tractor was sitting, but could also be entering due to condensation. Don't think rain water could enter in any significant amount in a short amount of time. Case-IH Hy-Tran is great because traps a lot of water. A timing light and a shop manual would really help in setting the timing. I think all you need to do to replace the axle seal is remove the wheel, remove the hub, and remove the end cap from the axle housing, but I've never done one. There is no way to convert to live PTO. I run a 6-foot Bush Hog finish mower and it works just great. I would suggest picking up all of the manuals and the parts book. If you have any more questions, just ask, and I'll try to help. I think that the 240 is a great tractor, you get a lot of power in a small package.
