As the first two respondants said discs and pull type cultivators operators would just let the drawbar swing free, thus allowing the tractor to turn more easily on heavy draft. Made a tremendous difference on the amount of breaking on turns. This is also the reason for the roller on the swinging drawbar. Not that the roller allowed the tractor much advantage in the actual turn, the roller reduced wear on the drawbar parts. When plowing however, I always liked the side hill lever to hold in place and move the swinging drawbar. On 560 with 4 furrow trailer plow I used a hydraulic cylinder for side hill positioning of swinging drawbar.
