Dick - Doubt you can get at the timing gear without removing the bolster casting. The crank pulley must be removed before you can take off the timing cover to get at the cam gear, and the pulley hub is too deep to slide it off with the bolster in place.

And as you suspect, that bolster is HEAVY! You'll need some sort of overhead lift (I used a bucket loader) to safely remove/reinstall the bolster. However when you are all finished you will be delighted with how smooth and quiet the motor runs - well worth the effort!!
