How do you time an M with a timing light? Unless you are referring to static timing with a light through the points like the manuals say, I don't know how to time one when it is running. The timing might be a little advanced. I have two M's which diesel regularly. I like to throttle them way down and pull the choke just as they die. You don't get much gas in the cylinders and they are ready to start. Smoke coming out the intake is the engine running backwards, which is not good for it. You can verify this by looking at the fan. Having it in 5th gear and setting the brake before letting the clutch out also works but I think could be a little dangerous.
