starter keeps binding on ring gear, why?

Hello,
My farmall M runs great, the starter turns over like mad and the startup process sounds great, but sometimes when I start it up, the starter is bound against the ring gear and does not spin. I think it is shooting past the ring gear and no returning? Or is it not aligning up with the ring gear teeth and hitting it head on instead of meshing with the teeth? If a fella were to grease up the ring gear really good, would that solve the problem?
