The problem is that the vent holes in the cap get plugged with dirt, which prevents the fuel tank from properly venting. One farmer got burned several years ago when he took off his tractor's fuel cap, the vent of which was plugged up with dirt, and his lit cigarette caught the venting fuel vapors on fire. IH got sued, and the new, redesigned fuel cap was the result. As long as your vent holes are clear, you should be OK.

You can obtain a new cap from any Case IH dealer for free. Take in your old cap and he'll exchange it for a new one. The new one is taller than the old one.
