SMTA push rod won't go down all of the way

I am replacing a head gasket on my SMTA. One of the push rods will not go down far enough. Apparently its lifter pulled out of the hole it goes in when I removed the push rods to get the head off. Can anyone tell me how to get the lifter back in its slot? My neighbor says to take the distributor and hydrolic pump off and take off the side plate to expose the lifters, but I am looking for an easier way. Is there one?
