The farm machinery and tractors that are of the early 50's and before were effective. It was alot better than the horse drawn days that lasted in some area's untill after WW2. Tractors and machinery have just gotten bigger and better since that time frame. The biggest thing you will find from using new stuff and going back to the 50's or before is time and work. Farming with the old equipment required more time and more things done by hand. That is the only thing that kept the old timers from farming more land. The H farmall is considered a 2 plow tractor and the M is considered a 3 plow tractor. The road gear in these tractors was fairly fast. But when you get in the field with one and farm for a half a day you will see that the work gearing is pretty slow. Even 4th gear is pretty slow and if you were plowing you would probably be in 2nd or 3rd. The question here I think is how many acres you are going to farm in comparison to how much time you have to farm it. If farming 320 acres and you were aloting all your time to it I would say it would be possible. If farming in your spare time with the old machinery I would say 80 acres might be more than you can chew at times. If you have short time to do work I would say you would be better off to get a little newer and bigger tractor instead of having several old ones. If you have plenty of time and the want to do it the old way I would say the old equipment would be ok. But you would probably have to be a little like me and think it is fun to run the old stuff. That is what makes it enjoyable.
