Hi SAm. My experience is it's possible to perform a coarse field adjustment on a voltage regulator using just a voltmeter and the tractor ammeter. But for an accurate adjusment it requires good instruments (an accurate DVM, a carbon pile variable load, etc), and is kind of fussy with air gaps, spring tensions, etc. that must be precisely set.

I've found it's easier and less hassle to simply install a new regulator ($35 US) when an old one begins causing problems. It's cheaper than ruining a battery ($50 or so) or frying the generator ($100+) because I got the regulator adjusted wrong.
