I would use a thin coating of glue on one side of gasket, and glue the gasket to either the head or the housing previous to reassembling. This will aid in aligning everything up. My personal opinion is to stay away from silicon or heavy sealants. They work well in the begining but create problems down the road. And make sure you get 100% of old glue and gaskets off of the surfaces. A razor blade works good.
