Scott, I just changed mine and I put it in with the big end up (the end which the metal cover is secured to). If I placed it with the big end down, the metal cover would seat in the bolster casting and not on the center bearing surface and I had no bearing action. When I installed it with the big side up, the smaller diameter bearing surface would seat on the bolster shaft spacer and the larger in the bolster casting and I had bearing action.
