you should hook up a voltohmeter to the battery and check it for polarity.if a battery is completely discharged and then charged backward then the labels on the battery will be incorrect.it sounds to me like that has happened.as bob says you just need to swap the wires at the ampmeter.but the meter would not read backwards if the battery is correct.
