If I may, I'd offer this advice. First and foremost, don't let this discourage you to the point of selling your tractor. Chances are you've got the plug wires hooked up wrong or something else simple. I'm guessing here, but from your description of the sound its making, it sounds like the starter is not enguaging the flywheel. I'm wondering if perhaps your starter bendix has caught in the teeth of the ring gear on the flywheel? Have you tried cranking it by hand?? If it seems to be locked up, loosen the starter mounting bolts and it should retract and then work normally. If this is the case, and its caught, and stuck, this would explain the smoke coming from the starter. You could remove the starter completely and bench test it with your jumper cables and see if it runs normally. I'm betting this is what you've got going on.
