The number on the block is the engine serial number. The early ones were pretty close to the tractor serial number, so yours is likely a 1940 as you say. However, who knows if you have the original engine or not. I have a 1947 MD (per the serial number on the clutch housing), but it does not have the original engine in it. The engine that is in it came out of a WD-6.
