Not sure I agree with all the other posts completely. In all the hours I've driven an M, I've never seen the need to shift on the fly except when going from 4th to 5th and even that isn't absolutely necessary. It will start in 5th from a standstill by getting it to roll a bit, drop the clutch momentarily to let the engine RPM come back up, then engage the clutch and let er go. If you are trying to start a big load in 5th, you will probably need to de-clutch more than once. I believe the de-clutching is easier on the tractor than grinding transmission gears. The field speed gears, 1st through 4th, should only need to be selected once when you start from standstill without a need to ever "fly shift" them.
