Almost correct, Steve. The "W" means that the oil is a winter grade, true. But it also means the "W" weight was arrived at using a cold crank simulator, or other such instrument. If I have a 10W-30 oil, that means the oil has a kinemetic viscosity that would normally be assigned to a SAE 30 oil, but at cold temperatures, the oil would show a resistance to cranking as if it were a 10 weight oil. One can split hairs here, and the difference is slight. I suppose to the purist, I should have specified a 10W oil. As to the original question: Use a light weight oil in the winter. And stick with non-detergent. When your temperatures shift up in the spring, I would move to a 30 oil.
