Why won't it start in cold?

My 44 A started fine in the fall and summer. but now it is around 10 degrees and the starter won't turn over. My husband hand crqanks it and after a couple times she starts. Then the starter works. My battery is on the verge of neding replacement too. It is a 6V and do we need to go to 12v to help it crank over better in the cold? What iis wrong with a cold engine to prevent an easy start like in warm weather. Mary
