Kurt, I'm now building a small tractor on my own and the costs really add up. I think like you, hydraulics would be the way to go, but I'd have the hyd. motor in front of a four speed tranny, then you can use a real axel in the back. LOTS of little stuff to deal with and if you keep track of your time, you will work for next to nothing. Just my opinion, but have a go at it, it's FUN!
