350u wont run

hi i have a 350u that i rerung and replaced rod bearings in. bolted back together and it doesnt want to start. have spark..firing order is correct..lots of compression..will hit once or twice on ether but nothing after that
usually they will run for a while on a squirt of ether..had to take off carb to change studs in manifold..i absolutely hate int for engineering that linkage..could it be positioned wrong..whats best way to tell? how is best way to line up the tab and slot if it does turn out to be the problem..thanks for any suggestions
