I've fought this problem too. The return oil rushes from the bottom and hits the lid, causing oil to spray against the vent in the lid. If you have the original flat washer which came with the lid, you will see a slot machined in the washer. That is supposed to be a vent, so air can go in and out as it heats and cools. You don't want any gaskets or seals in this area. Cut a piece of tin the size of the resavoir and slide it down the hold down stud right on top of the filter. This will act as a baffle and keep the oil from rushing against the lid. It has workrd several times for me.
