Ardie, References to first and second timing marks refer to which notch reaches the pointer first (or second) as the crank pulley turns. For a distributor (battery ignition): Connect the two clips to the battery, red to the + terminal. Connect the third lead to the #1 (front of the engine, closest to the radiator) spark plug wire. Locate the two notches (timing marks) on the front crankshaft pulley and the pointer on the engine just behind the pulley. They are on the same side as the spark plugs. When the engine is idling, timing should be at TDC, the second mark. As RPM is increased, the timing should advance toward the first notch. For a magneto: Loosen the hold down bolt for the mag and rotate the top of the mag towards the engine block. Set the timing marks to TDC (on the crank pulley, engine not running). Slowly turn the top of the mag away from the engine block, stopping when the impulse coupling makes a loud click. Tighten the hold down bolt on the mag. Check with a timing light as above, making sure the engine has enough RPM to not allow the impulse to click. TDC marks should still be aligned. While checking timing with a light, be careful not to come in contact with the fan blades! If the distributor or mag is not installed on the engine, you will need a manual, as there is a detailed set of instructions to follow. Hope this helps, Phil
