There was a nationwide program about twenty years ago thru the County Sheriff department and a metal stamp with a code for State, County (or Parish), your name that was registered, and registration number. It was a simple code that any law enforcement officer could look at and tell where the machine came from. They had certain places where you should stamp the machine like the end of the rear axle, etc so the officer would know where to look. I still have my stamp but I said something to a sheriff couple of years back about the registry and he looked at me like I had two heads. So I guess that program died on the vine.
