I use the lighter oil if I plan to use my M or H in temperatures below about 20 degrees. However, 30 weight is a good spring, summer and fall weight. Also, you are supposed to use a non-detergent oil. No multigrade to my knowledge is non-detergent and only some straight weights are. The reason for the non-detergent is to allow the dirt to settle to the bottom of the breather cup.
