Tony - Sounds like the clutch may be 'sticking' to the pressure plate, possibly due to oil/grease/crud on the face of the pressure plate. This could cause the clutch to momentarily stick until the springs overcome the contact friction. Another possibility may be weak pressure plate springs. Before you take everything apart try spraying the clutch and pressure plate with brake cleaner and see if that cleans it up.
