Letter series farmalls were a positive grounded electrical system from factory. This simply means that the positive post of battery was hooked up as ground. It was also a 6 volt system. Many letter series tractors have a non-original or altered electrical system. If your tractor is lucky enough to have an original system it may just be that the battery is hooked up backwards (negative ground) and the amp meter is showing a charge but actually discharging the battery. Another possibility would be that the system is not charging due to a bad connection or bad voltage regulator and after several starts the battery won't start the tractor no longer and needs to be recharged by a battery charger. If your sytem is altered or non-original than you may want to post some details on how the electrical system is set up. It could be set up any number of ways such as negative ground versus positive ground, 12 volt versus 6 volt, alternator versus generator, voltage regulator versus cut out on earlier model letter series, or the wireing itself may be different than original. Hard to pin point the problem not knowing just how your system is set up if not original.

Experimentation, from the most complex assembly to the most simple and mundane component, is as an integral a part of any farm tractor's development
