Dan - Here's a few things to try in order: 1 - Check first the obvious - make sure the wiring is properly connected and all terminals tight. Make sure also the regulator is solidly grounded (mounting plate is clean and the screws are tight) 2 - With the engine off, turn on the ignition switch and look at the ammeter. It should show 3 or 4 amps discharge. If it shows a few amps CHARGE the ammeter hooked up backward (swap the wires on the two ammeter posts), or you have the system ground reversed. If it indicates 0, the ammeter itself is bad, or the ammeter is wired up wrong. 3 - Polarize the generator: With the motor still off briefly connect the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator with a short jumper wire. Soon as you get a spark you've successfully polarized. 4 - Now start the tractor and run at about 1/2 speed. If the ammeter shows a few amps of charge, you are all set. If it shows discharge: 5 - Temporarily jumper the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator while observing the ammeter. If it now shows charge, replace the regulator. If it still shows discharge: 6 - Temporarily connect the regulator FLD terminal to a good ground while observing the ammeter. If it now shows charge, again replace the regulator. If it still shows discharge the problem is in the generator. Unless you have experience with generators, suggest taking it to a starter shop for a checkup. ...Bob M PS - I too own a '53 Super H - great tractor!!

It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
