I have in my pocession, pocket size note books put out by a fertilizer company in Chicago in that same era. In these notebooks my great grandmother recorded from 1896 to 1901; weather, what they did around the farm and any events she deemed special. She however in the record makes no mention of Christmas. A typical Dec 25 might read," George hitched the horses to sleds, went to woodlot for firewood (that would be next years firewood) It was a nice sunny but cool day." She would also keep account of amount of snow on ground. I found this one a bit hard to believe as they never missed church. The ancestry was Methodist and Prespeterian. My grandmother wouldn't even play cards, not even something as harmless as old maid. Was this typical across North America in the late 1800.
