Most of what you outline was personal preference. with the swinging bar on top most farmers used a U bolt type of device to clamp it tightly to cross bar. This seemed to be the preference of those doing a lot of pto work. The swinging under cross bar and sespended by the roller was used by farmers pulling field cultivators, disc harrows, etc. They would just let the drawbar swing, made for easier turning under heavy draft. The roller was designed to cut down on wear on cross bar as well as swinging drawbar. As to the roller being an after market device, I don't think. Four new Farmalls came to our farm with that drawbar and all equiped with the roller. Any of the Farmalls I saw at dealer had the roller. In my neck of the woods if you wanted the U bolt you had to order same.
