Casting numbers will be at odd locations around the tractor. The wheels, engine block, torque tube, maybe the right axle housing, for example. The casting codes are date codes in MM*DD*Y format. The asterisks will look like screw heads, and the year will be indicated by a letter -- N was the letter for 44, but it wouldn't be unusual to find Ms in the casting codes. Those would be parts cast in 1943 but not assembled into a tractor until 44. Numbers that end in R1 (or R-anything or D) are part numbers, not casting codes. The engine serial number is on a flat spot directly under the front-most spark plug.
